Rehearsing North Seattle Symphonic Band
An earlier rehearsal on the challenging piece Firefly, by Ryan George. The primary rehearsal goals are timing, articulation, and character of the piece.
Andy Chapel is guest conducting Firefly as the opener to the joint Lincoln High School and North Seattle College concert on March 2024.
Conducting North Seattle Symphonic Band
Amparito Roca by Jaime Texidor, conducted by Andrew Chapel and performed by NSSB on their December 10th concert, Viva! This pasodoble march was a fantastic opportunity for the ensemble to work on playing softly, in order to not cover the beautiful flute solo.
Lesson Resources & Arrangements
- Create Your Own Arrangement worksheet to guide 6th grade orchestra musicians in creating their own performance piece from a folk song. A final student-created version is here.
- Melody from folk song Shenandoah, written out for all band parts. This was created to help a young band work on phrasing melodic lines, in order to apply these skills to Robert Sheldon’s arrangement of the same name.
- Multi-level arrangement created for both band and orchestra to use at the Kent School District 2024 Area Festivals: We Will Rock You by Queen. You can view the band score here.
